I am currently studying my 1st year of FdA Fashion but as this is my first blog post; I thought I’d back track a bit, let you into a bit of my creative past and the journey that lead me to where I am today.
Throughout my entire compulsory education years; although Art wasn’t always my favourite subject; I thrived on anything that required creativity, this lead to me developing a passion for design and ultimately choosing to study Art & Design at GCSE level. The change from studying Art to studying BTEC Art & Design was incredible; no longer was I only studying the work of others, I was creating my own personal style of artwork. The focus was on my own personal creative development. I chose to continue my studies at my school’s sixth form. After studying Art & Design at sixth form I applied to study Foundation Diploma Studies in Art & Design. My interview didn’t go as well as I had hoped and I was told my work, or my drawing skills in particular, were not good enough to study Art & Design at that level. Rather than give up on everything I had worked towards, I took the opportunity to attend a Summer School programme at the college and dedicated the time there to developing my drawing skills and improving my confidence; I was then re-interviewed and accepted onto the Foundation Studies course! I was then more determined than ever to succeed.
The pace and workload of the Foundation Studies was intense but I quickly learnt how to manage my time more effectively and gained a lot of skills and knowledge within a matter of weeks. Working through various projects within different specialisms of Art & Design was invaluable as I learnt a wide range of skills and techniques that I could/can transfer to use within my chosen specialism of Fashion. Although I enjoyed working in all of the areas of Art & Design; it was always going to be Fashion that I chose to specialise in. Fashion has been my main interest since I can remember, playing dressing up, styling dolls, and even drawing and designing from a young age. Therefore Fashion was the obvious choice, and studying Fashion as my specialism on the Foundation Studies course gave me more and more confidence and determination with each project. I think deciding to study Foundation Diploma Studies in Art & Design was the best decision I have ever made; I learnt and developed so many skills and techniques; and my confidence, both in myself and in my work, improved a lot. Without Foundation Studies I don’t think I would have the skills or confidence to work effectively on the FdA Fashion course. Obviously I then applied to studying HE at Newcastle College and after an interview and successful completion of the Foundation Diploma Studies in Art & Design; I was accepted onto the course. And I think that takes us up to the point I’m at now; studying my 1st year of Foundation Degree Fashion!
